Youth leader shot dead, others injured in Akwa Ibom

The Youths’ President of Atai Ubiaku community in Itu local government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Edet Ibanga was on Wednesday shot dead by suspected cultists while others have sustained various degrees of injuries.

It was gathered that the suspected cultists numbering about 18 stormed his area along Urua Ekpa road, shot and fatally injured some tenants in a compound occupied mostly by students of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO).

The suspected cultists it was further gathered came looking for a tenant who had issues with his girlfriend but the deceased who was the president of youths in the area on hearing the gunshot and the noise rushed to the scene to address the issue.

According to an eyewitness who identified himself as Imoh Ekim; one of the hoodlums who was stationed at the gate of the compound immediately shot the deceased on the chest and he died on the spot.

His words, “the incident happened around 1:00am on Wednesday when the hoodlums stormed the compound in search of one man, who was having an issue with his girlfriend.

“The deceased, being the youths’ president had to rush from his compound to the opposite compound at Urua Ekpa Road upon hearing the sound of gunshot and heated arguments involving the people.

“He was shot in the chest immediately he opened the gate of the compound to try to enter with a view to settling the dispute, but oblivious of the fact that one-armed cultist, who was stationed to man the gate opened fire directly and he went down.”

When journalists visited the scene, the daughter of the deceased identified as Blessing, a 200 level Banking and Finance student of UniUyo was seen crying.

She only rained curses on the hoodlums saying, “God will not allow them to go unpunished. All of them must be arrested and must be punished.”

On how the incident happened she said, “I will not be able to give details because they just called me from school this morning to come home where I discovered this shocking incident of my father being shot dead by armed criminals.”

Meanwhile, his remains have reportedly been deposited in a mortuary.

However, Journalists sighted some plain cloth Policemen, who arrived in an unmarked car, requesting his photograph, which the family showed them on phone before they left to examine the corpse at the mortuary.

When the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon, was contacted, he confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate, adding that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Amiengheme Andrew has ordered a discreet investigation into the matter.

He said, “We are in receipt of that incident; it is quite unfortunate and unacceptable. The CP has ordered an investigation into the matter and in no distant time, the perpetrators will be apprehended.”
